6th Witchfire, 24 BE

“Abso-freakin-lutely not!” Tamerin fumed. He shook his head as he paced back and forth in the main room of Sirena’s lavishly appointed suite in her home duchy of Valoran. “Have you lost your ever-loving mind?”

Sirena calmly stared at him from her seat on the leather couch. “Apparently so. As you correctly stated, Grand Duke Mylek—” She motioned at the chair the aforementioned gentleman currently occupied. “—does not trust you and the Night Rangers alone and unescorted inside Emporia’s borders. While he would abide by his monarch’s wishes, that would mean you going through more official channels. Something you are trying to avoid.”

Tamerin shot a narrow-eyed gaze at Mylek. “I never said that.”

Mylek shrugged, his perfect elven features blank. “You didn’t have to. I’m not a fool. It’s clear there is something in, around, or under those mountains you desire to investigate, but you don’t want anyone, or rather someone, in your government to know.” He stood and crossed his arms, continuing in his rich, cultured tones. “The only reasons I am considering allowing this foray at all are threefold. One, you and the Night Rangers do not have a reputation for thievery or treasure hunting. Your reputation is one of brashness, thrill-seeking, and justice. So, if you want to go to those mountains to look for something, it is to protect people.

“Two, if you are seeking to protect people and don’t want someone in your government to find out, it means you are worried someone is actively working against Alshain from within the government. That cannot be permitted to continue since it will weaken your kingdom, and a strong Alshain benefits Emporia.

“Three…Sirena asked me.”

Tamerin ground his teeth together, trying to rein in his temper.

I wish he were as dumb as he looks.

“That still does not explain why my fiancée believes she should be going with us on this little foray.”

Mylek snorted. “Simple, really. It harkens back to that whole ‘brashness’ issue I mentioned a minute ago. I would rather not have half the Emporian side of those mountains blown off through some stupid, preventable action on your part. Plus, it gives us all plausible deniability if we need it.”

Before Tamerin could respond, Kathis pushed away from the wall she’d been leaning on and stepped beside him. “How?”

Sirena stood and moved to Tamerin’s other side, laying a hand on his arm and pulling his glare away from Mylek. “Because some miners believe they found an adamantine ore deposit around the border between our nations. Since the border is in the mountains, where exactly it falls is up to interpretation. Mylek and my father were already in discussions about sending delegations to meet there and discuss the available options for disbursing those ores and their profits.”

Elysoun piped up from beside Sirena’s bookshelf near the pantheran’s bedroom door. “So, instead of normal delegations, the Grand Duke and a Lady of Valoran will head there to discuss things personally as a sign of goodwill.”

“Like the goodwill between them is not already
